WHAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED AND OUR PLANS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD
OUR JOURNEY SO FAR
When our Collaborative embarked in September 2020 on this latest phase of the IAL’s journey, we did so because of our ardent belief in the need for a dedicated specialist network for professional association leaders. The strength of the IAL community is the community; and as we all know, access to a network of professional peers and resources is invaluable in supporting our professional and personal development as the sector’s senior leaders.
Within a remarkable multitude of contexts, association chief executives and their c-suite teams face increasing expectations from across a widening spectrum of interested parties, ranging from members, directors, and staff, to sponsors, policymakers, and industry. It is thus increasingly important that associations be underpinned by an articulation of professional association leadership, and that chief executives and their c-suite teams benefit from the same quality of peer support, professional development, and advice and guidance that they strive to deliver for their members.
As we promised during the IAL’s transition in late 2020, throughout 2021 we’ve worked tirelessly to provide a platform for members’ success, and we have worked tirelessly to deliver for our community.

There is of course always more to be done but it is important that we take time to reflect on just how far we’ve travelled in a relatively short time, and to highlight to members our plans for the year ahead. We’re not boasting but we are proud of what we’ve achieved; and we want to remind you, our members and supporters that you’re a part of an expanding global community of professional association leaders.
We continue to grow, develop, influence, and deliver. In our Strategic Plan we set ourselves some challenging goals; we didn’t want to just keep doing what has always been done, and we wanted to stretch ourselves for the benefit of our members and our community. We’ve realised some of our goals, others are going to take longer and may need tackling in a different way, but you can be sure that we will always be working to deliver them for you throughout the year ahead.
We continue to build and maintain relationships with organisations that support our mission to advance excellence in association leadership. During the year we have forged new relationships and nurtured existing partnerships with the below organisations, without whom our membership offerings would be noticeably diminished.
In addition we want to acknowledge the energy and enthusiasm of our volunteers, particularly our Board of Directors, who dedicate much of their time, skills and expertise in supporting delivery of the Association’s mission, vision and strategic objectives.
Sadly, one of our Directors, Ian Thompson, Chief Executive of British APCO, passed away in November 2020. He is greatly missed but his influence and ambitions for the IAL are still keenly felt, and we acknowledge the enduring impact of his contributions as we established and developed the IAL Collaborative.
Finally, we want to acknowledge the endeavour and creativity of our secretariat, who work tirelessly to translate our strategic objectives into tangible member benefits, and who give their time freely as part of the IAL Collaborative.
